Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) is the primary government body responsible for formulating and implementing the country’s foreign policy and managing its international relations. Myanmar has adhered to an “independent, active, and non-aligned” foreign policy, emphasizing peaceful coexistence, mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-interference in internal affairs, and maintaining friendly relations with all nations, especially its neighbors.

The MOFA operates numerous departments to fulfill its diverse functions. These include the Political Department, handling bilateral relations; the ASEAN Affairs Department, focusing on regional cooperation with the ASEAN Member States, the Strategic Studies and Training Department, for policy research and diplomatic training; the Protocol Department, managing diplomatic courtesies; the International Organizations and Economic Department, engaging with global bodies and promoting economic diplomacy; and the Consular and Legal Affairs Department, providing services to citizens abroad and addressing legal matters.

Through its network of embassies and consulates worldwide, the MOFA works to protect and promote Myanmar’s national interests, foster trade and investment, and engage in international dialogues and cooperation on various global issues
