Diploma in Diplomacy (DID 1/2025), Nay Pyi Taw Session, which commenced on 28-7-2025, is currently ongoing. On 11-8-2025, U Thant Kyaw, Chairman of the Myanmar Institute of Strategic and International Studies (MISIS), delivered a lecture “Preventive Diplomacy” to the participants.
The session covered the concepts and practical applications of Preventive Diplomacy, with detailed explanations and discussions supported by relevant examples.
In lecture, it was emphasized that the practice of diplomacy is based on five fundamental pillars: negotiation, representation, communication, observation and reporting, and the promotion of national interests. The concept of preventive diplomacy was highlighted as a key approach aimed at preventing the outbreak or escalation of conflicts through early diplomatic engagement.
As part of the discussion, current tensions between Thailand and Cambodia were examined as a case study, with a focus on how preventive diplomacy is being applied to manage and mitigate the situation through peaceful means.
